Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
This set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.
