‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s road from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

Whenhe debut appearance the Athletic striker competed in England, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in British turf, against the Black Cats two months later, he scored. Another occasion, against the Citizens six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, also. “In fact,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Man United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the training ground, the city, the day’s first practice is set to begin; following that, the short journey to Loiu airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a difficult season for the club, partly because of the requirements of being here. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. But, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.

In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and returning after absence in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he says.

Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed the coach, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he experienced a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but with every stage you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his first game and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All the minor details: execute them.

“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”

Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed emotionally in 2020, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come a vacancy arises where you play, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states savor the moment. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
