Ayoub El Kaabi's Stunning Finish Secures Morocco's Win Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opening Match.

Host nation the Moroccan side shook off a nervy beginning to overcome their island opponents in the competition's opening game on Sunday, with goals from Brahim DĂaz and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.

It was a less than dominant showing, however, from the strongly favored hosts, who are ranked 97 places higher than the small island nation in the world rankings and had to grind out for the points in rainy conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Start and Spurned Chances

Morocco failed to convert an early spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at the interval even with controlling the ball, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute of the second half.

The goal came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to prevent the ball from going out before laying it square for Brahim DĂaz to calmly pass home.

Every first match is invariably tough but we improved in the second half,” commented manager Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Magic

Any lingering nerves was subsequently eased by a moment of pure individual brilliance from substitute El Kaabi. Just ten minutes after coming on, the forward met a cross with a stunning bicycle kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the result.

Earlier in the match, the hosts could have been ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was awarded for a challenge on Brahim DĂaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi effort was kept out by keeper Yannick Pandor.

Comoros Defiant Stand and Late Chance

The underdogs comfortably held Morocco at bay until the Moroccans' superior firepower eventually told.

Goalkeeper Pandor made several other fine saves to limit the score as the game progressed, even though Comoros did have a chance for an equaliser shortly after DĂaz's goal, with Rafiki SaĂŻd firing straight at keeper Bounou.

Fitness Concern for Hosts

The three points was partially marred by an apparent injury to the captain, Romain SaĂŻss, who limped off after the 18th minute apparently in tears.

The defender had only made his comeback to the national side last month after a year’s layoff due to a serious ankle operation.

This result continues Morocco's historic run of consecutive victories to nineteen, surpassing the previous best of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
