Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the board at OpenAI, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.

Summers stated in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their progress".

The prominent academic, who previously led the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.

The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm said it understood Summers' decision to depart.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," the organization remarked.

Legislative Background

This news follows after the two houses of the US legislature decided on recently to pass a legislation that would require the US justice department to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will subsequently head to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to approve the legislation, after changing his position on the subject following objections from his supporters.

A collection of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago included multiple prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those figures.

The communications showed that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the official to influential global figures.

After the emails were released with the general audience, he expressed he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to maintain interacting with the financier".

He added that he desired "to rebuild confidence and repair relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Summers occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He led Harvard from five years and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public duties recently on Monday, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in DC where the professor was a researcher, verified that Summers was not affiliated with the organization.

He became part of the board of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO the company leader.
