Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers While Executing Eviction Action in Italy

Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the residence near Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the location and another man who fled following the explosion was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location showed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official thought the blast had taken place on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
