McLaren Racing Blames Opposing Racers for Norris-Piastri Incident
A racing wheel detaches from the car of Lando Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Piastri at the opening of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.
McLaren Formula 1 executives Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to rival drivers for the incident between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.
The Australian driver, leading Norris in the standings by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.
The incident forced out both McLaren drivers out of the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.
Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Incident
Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "amateur hour", stating: "Obviously Nico made contact with Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."
McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella commented: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we were denied the chance to race."
"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of experience don't act with justful prudence. Enter the initial turn, make sure you don't damage competitors and carry on."
McLaren suggested that the team principal was mentioning both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.
Differing Perspectives on the Incident
Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he believed the Australian had not shown enough understanding of the dangers of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he chose to cut back to try to overtake his teammate.
The Australian had a stronger launch than Norris and initially competed on the outside on the ascending approach to the turn.
However he then cut back in an attempt to get a advantage on Norris on the way out, only to collide with the Sauber driver.
Driver Reactions After the Collision
The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I tried to cut back on Norris and we were both very far from the corner apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."
His teammate commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back things happened and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more people further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."
The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some cars came very quickly from the outside switching back and then I was there in the center."
The Sauber driver, who had qualified a season-best fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from the previous day in the bin. Just chaotic."
"Piastri steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and way out of the first corner but I cannot vanish."
"I had Fernando attack on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Piastri steered inward and the collision was unavoidable."
Post-Crash and Team Response
The team will analyze the incident with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on the weekend.
The team principal said: "Overall displeased but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our performance point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."
"The points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more care would be beneficial for all involved."
Championship Implications
The race was won by the Verstappen, who closed in on both team racers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 behind of the Briton.
Stella said: "The implication is what the maths says - we missed out on eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two skilled drivers. We look forward to just some standard competition."
Verstappen said he was taking the championship race by race.
