Offspring of Previous South African President Jacob G Zuma Denies Terrorism Allegations as Legal Proceedings Starts
The daughter of previous South African Head of State Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror allegations at the beginning of her court case in the harbor city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she posted on social media four years ago during violent demonstrations in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.
A week of anarchy in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and fire-setting, left at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (ÂŁ2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of inciting this turmoil and is charged with charges of encouragement to commit terror acts and civil unrest.
Background of the Proceedings
The unrest were focused in the areas of Gauteng region and KZN and came after the previous president's apprehension for ignoring a judicial ruling to give evidence at an probe into accusations of impropriety while he was holding office.
She has repeatedly refuted the allegations against her, with her legal representative previously describing the prosecution's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also consistently said the charges against her were an effort to resolve political grievances with her parent after he started his own political organization and competed against the African National Congress.
Endorsement and Legal Defense
This was reinforced by the foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial harassment" against the former president and his family.
A few of supporters from her political organization, her party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other organization officials attended the court sessions inside.
The defense has maintained that the evidence presented by government lawyers is insufficient and fails to provide compelling evidence for a criminal finding.
Main Aspects of the Case
- Online posts from 2019 form the core of the prosecution's evidence

- The accused is charged with multiple allegations of provocation to violence

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the court in what is anticipated to be a closely watched court case with substantial politically charged implications for South Africa.
