Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' remarkable comeback victory over the New York. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team finished 4-11 in his first season prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
