Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised strong concerns about a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and City Celebrations

Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. These events will take place around the Group G match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags inside the stadium.

“In our role as hosts, our role is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.

Cultural Context of Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it refused to be linked to events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains full authority over match venues during games. While it prohibits political signage with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of flags being seized.
