Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Test Series Team

The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.

The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to decide whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.

The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.

Pitch Factors Favor Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted five past matches.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.

Spin Options Considered

Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.

However the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and excel out here.”
