France has issued an urgent warning for its citizens in Mali to evacuate as rapidly as achievable, as militant groups maintain their restriction of the nation.

The French foreign ministry recommended citizens to leave using commercial flights while they remain available, and to steer clear of surface transportation.

Fuel Crisis Intensifies

A 60-day fuel blockade on Mali, established by an al-Qaeda-aligned group has upended routine existence in the capital, the urban center, and additional areas of the surrounded Sahel region state - a former French colony.

France's announcement occurred alongside MSC - the world's biggest maritime firm - announcing it was halting its activities in Mali, citing the blockade and deteriorating security.

Jihadist Activities

The jihadist group the Islamist alliance has caused the hindrance by attacking petroleum vehicles on major highways.

Mali has no coast so each gasoline shipment are delivered by highway from neighboring states such as Senegal and Ivory Coast.

International Response

In recent weeks, the American diplomatic mission in Bamako announced that support diplomatic workers and their families would leave the nation during the crisis.

It mentioned the gasoline shortages had influenced the energy distribution and had the "possibility of affecting" the "overall security situation" in "unpredictable ways".

Governance Situation

The West African nation is now led by a military junta headed by the military leader, who first seized power in a coup in the past decade.

The military council had popular support when it gained authority, promising to handle the long-running security crisis caused by a separatist rebellion in the northern region by nomadic populations, which was then hijacked by radical groups.

International Presence

The United Nations stabilization force and French forces had been positioned in recent years to handle the growing rebellion.

The two have departed since the junta took over, and the military government has contracted Russian mercenaries to tackle the insecurity.

However, the Islamist rebellion has persisted and extensive regions of the north and east of the nation persist beyond state authority.
