The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
