The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Season on BBC

Line of Duty cast members
Vicky McClure are set to reprise their roles in the acclaimed crime series

The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
