During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him for good.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
